In an electrifying double-header featuring both boys' and girls' varsity teams on Pink Night, the Saint Joseph boys faced off against Trumbull in a game that saw impressive performances, hot shooting, and a thrilling atmosphere. Despite a strong start for the Cadets, Trumbull's sharpshooting ultimately secured an 88-62 victory.
The Saint Joseph boys got off to a promising start, establishing an early 22-16 lead over Trumbull in the first quarter. Star player TJ Wright led the way with a stellar performance, contributing 9 points, including two three-pointers. Josh Reid, stepping in due to early foul trouble for Jayden Febus, made an immediate impact off the bench with an athletic drive to the basket and disruptive defense, creating problems for Trumbull's slower players.
In the second period, Coach Buddy Bray's Trumbull team staged a comeback, going on a 12-5 run to take their first lead of the game. The key to their resurgence was hot shooting from beyond the arc, led by Ryan Johnston, who nailed four three-pointers on his way to a team-leading 27 points. At halftime, Trumbull held a slim 39-35 lead.
Despite Wright's standout performance with 27 points, no other Saint Joseph player reached double figures in the game. The team struggled to find their shooting form after the first quarter, allowing Trumbull to capitalize on easy baskets in transition. Every time Wright hit a big shot to swing the momentum, Trumbull responded with a crucial shot of their own.
In the end, Trumbull emerged victorious with an 88-62 win. Saint Joseph Coach Bernardi recognizes the need for defensive improvements in the team's rotations to counter sharpshooting opponents like Trumbull as they approach the playoffs.
