In a thrilling FCIAC matchup on Monday night, the SJ Boys faced off against Staples in a hard-fought battle that ultimately ended in a 71-69 loss for the Cadets. Despite a promising start, defensive breakdowns plagued SJ throughout the night, proving to be their downfall in a closely contested game.
The game got underway with SJ showing early promise, but defensive lapses allowed Staples to capitalize on open opportunities. Aggressive defense on the ball created steals for the Cadets, but inconsistent rotations led to uncontested three-pointers and easy layups for the Wreckers.
The first half saw a back-and-forth battle, with SJ and Staples trading leads. SJ's star player, T.J. Wright, showcased moments of brilliance, contributing 21 points to the game. Jayden Febus had a career-high performance, scoring 17 points, providing a balanced scoring attack. Sean Christy also made significant contributions with 13 points and 7 rebounds.
As the second half began, SJ came out flat, allowing Staples to go on a 13-4 run in the third quarter. Heading into the final period, SJ found themselves trailing 50-60. However, Coach Bernardi's team displayed resilience, battling back to tie the game with just under two minutes remaining.
The Cadets' defensive pressure and improved rotations resulted in steals, leading to easy transition points. Despite the athleticism displayed by SJ, they fell short in the end. With less than a minute on the clock and the game tied, Bernardi called on star player T.J. Wright to create a game-winning shot. Wright's pull-up jumper hit the front iron, giving Staples an opportunity to take the lead.
SJ's defense appeared up to the challenge, causing what seemed like a turnover, but a late whistle preserved Staples' possession. Staples worked the clock and, with 2.5 seconds left, converted a wide-open layup after another defensive breakdown by the Cadets.
In the face of adversity, SJ continued to fight. Executing a perfect full-court pass, they created an open look for Wright, who came up just short in the final moments. Despite the loss, the team showcased determination and resilience.
- 1st Quarter: SJ 20 - Staples 18
- 2nd Quarter: SJ 32 - Staples 34
- 3rd Quarter: SJ 50 - Staples 60
- 4th Quarter: SJ 69 - Staples 71
Looking ahead to the playoffs, Coach Bernardi remains optimistic about his team's potential. Recognizing the firepower they possess, he acknowledges that tightening up the defensive stops and addressing rotation issues are crucial for success. With these improvements, the Cadets aim to make a strong playoff run, fueled by the hope of playing well into March.
