St. Joseph Boys Basketball Faces Tough Loss to Stamford in Hard-Fought Battle

1/5/24

Staff Writer

In a thrilling back-and-forth matchup on January 5, 2024, the Saint Joseph boys' basketball team encountered a challenging defeat against Stamford in the Stamford High gym. The closely contested game ended with Stamford securing a narrow 55-50 victory, marking a surprising turn of events that echoed throughout the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) and the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC).

The most astonishing revelation of the night was the limited scoring output from Saint Joseph's star player, TJ Wright, who is known for his consistent ability to contribute 20 points, even on an off night. Stamford's #2, Ejai Presley, emerged as a defensive force, employing a unique strategy to neutralize Wright's impact. Because he is much taller than Wright, Presley managed to play about three feet off the smaller guard while remaining disruptive on Wright's long-range jumpers.

Wright, typically an accurate shooter from behind the arc, faced an uncharacteristic challenge as he failed to make any three-pointers on the night. Presley's defensive prowess extended to the rim, where he either blocked or altered Wright's layup attempts, allowing him to convert only twice on layups. Despite the struggles, Wright showcased his versatility, contributing multiple assists and steals, recognizing the need to adapt when his usual scoring rhythm was disrupted.

Jaylen Febus, Wright's backcourt mate, stepped up in an attempt to compensate for Wright's difficulties. Febus displayed sharpshooting skills, hitting three three-pointers and leading the Cadets with 14 points. Sean Christy capitalized on Wright's assists, contributing 12 points of his own.

St. Joseph faced offensive challenges early on as Stamford employed full-court pressure, disrupting their usual fast-paced offensive style. The size difference between Presley and Wright, standing about 3-4 inches taller, significantly impacted Saint Joseph's offensive flow.

Presley, not limited to defensive contributions, showcased his skills as a ball handler and passer, closing out the game for the Black Knights with 8 of his 16 points in the final period. Ryan Connors added another 16 points for Stamford, with 8 coming in a strong first quarter.

Despite a resilient effort to close the gap, Saint Joseph fell short down the stretch, ultimately losing by five points with a final score of 55-50. Coach Jeff Bernardi, recognizing the outstanding start to the season by Wright, will undoubtedly work to keep the team motivated as they prepare for their next challenge against Warde on Tuesday night.

Notre Dame of Fairfield Secures Decisive Victory Over St. Joseph in Boys Basketball Duel

Staff Writer

In a decisive boys' basketball matchup on December 19, 2023, Notre Dame of Fairfield showcased their prowess, securing a resounding victory over the Saint Joseph Cadets with a final score of 76-49. The game unfolded as Notre Dame put up an incredible 50 points in the first half alone, setting the tone for their dominating performance.

Kamryn Salters emerged as a key player for Notre Dame, making a significant impact by contributing 21 points. Salters spearheaded the scoring onslaught, particularly in the first half, where he notched an impressive 15 points. His knack for timely shots consistently extended Notre Dame's lead, creating a comfortable advantage that proved challenging for Saint Joseph to overcome.

Despite St. Joseph's resilient efforts, led by TJ Wright's game high, 24 points, Notre Dame maintained control throughout the game. Wright's sharpshooting from beyond the arc kept the Cadets in contention, especially with crucial three-pointers that fueled hopes of a comeback in the fourth quarter.

In the third quarter, St. Joseph put up an impressive 17 points, showcasing their determination to claw back into the game. However, Notre Dame's Parrish Edmund and Nate Charlot stepped up in the second half, preventing any potential comeback. Edmund contributed 14 points, while Charlot added 15, using their size and athleticism to slash through the defense and secure the victory for Notre Dame.

Notably, despite St. Joseph's strong performance in the third quarter, they still did not outscore Notre Dame in any quarter of the game. The balanced scoring attack from Notre Dame proved too much for the Cadets, solidifying Notre Dame's dominance and affirming their status as an elite force in CT high School basketball this year.

Looking ahead, Coach Bernardi of St. Joseph expects some of his young players to emerge as additional scoring threats alongside TJ Wright. The goal is to create a more balanced scoring attack, allowing the Cadets to compete at an even higher level as the season progresses. As both teams reflect on this matchup, Notre Dame of Fairfield celebrates a convincing victory, while St. Joseph looks to build on the lessons learned to elevate their performance in the games to come. 🏀💪

St Joseph Girls Showcase Dominance Over Stratford in Convincing 72-42 Victory

Staff Writer

In an intense matchup last night at St Joseph High School in Trumbull, CT, the St Joseph girls' basketball team demonstrated their prowess, securing a convincing 72-42 victory over Stratford. The game kicked off with early dominance from Stratford, led by sharpshooting performances from Jazmyne Wright, Sara D'Aloia, and Lily Labella. However, as the namesake of the St Joseph gymnasium, legendary Coach Vito Montelli, used to say, basketball is a game of runs. Coach Chris Lindwall strategically called a timeout late in the first quarter to halt Stratford's momentum, setting the stage for a strategic turnaround by the Lady Cadets.

St Joseph's resurgence was ignited by sharpshooting from Erin Donnegan and Gigi Gracia, complemented by the inside presence of Erin Lovett. The girls embarked on an impressive run, and although Stratford fought back valiantly, they found themselves trailing by 10 points at halftime. The second half witnessed a decisive St Joseph run that Stratford struggled to recover from, ultimately resulting in a deflating 20-point deficit. Coach Lindwall's halftime adjustments to the 3/4 court pressure produced multiple turnovers and easy layups, solidifying St Joseph's dominance.

Stratford possesses a wealth of untapped talent, with players like Jazmyne Wright and Grace Petrie yet to find their groove. Reserves such as Emma Petrie, Shyan Rolle, and Maddie Bike are still discovering their roles. There is tremendous potential within this team, and as these players develop and define their roles, the sky's the limit for what this group can achieve. The glimpses of talent displayed so far indicate that we have only scratched the surface of what this team can become.

Adding to St Joseph's impressive performance, Coach Montelli's granddaughter, who plays for SJ, sparked the second and third-quarter runs with multiple steals leading to easy baskets for her and her teammates. Her defensive prowess played a pivotal role in extending the lead and maintaining control of the game. As St Joseph continues to showcase their talent and experience on the court, they are poised to compete once again for a state championship. With a roster boasting both skill and seasoned players, the team is well-positioned for success as they navigate the challenges of the season. Fans can anticipate an exciting journey ahead as the St Joseph girls' basketball team aims to leave an indelible mark in the pursuit of championship glory.

The St. Joseph Cadets are gearing up for an exciting basketball season, ready to make their mark in the highly competitive FCIAC. With a mix of seasoned players and promising newcomers, the Cadets are poised for a dynamic and action-packed journey on the court.

Playing in the FCIAC, the team's primary goal this season is to cultivate a strong team identity focused on teamwork, defense, and execution, according to second year coach Jeff Bernardi. . The blend of experienced players and fresh talent creates a dynamic roster with the potential to achieve at the highest levels.

St. Joseph adopts a defense-first approach, relying on pressure man-to-man defense to transition into a fast-paced and efficient motion offense. The team strategically leverages its strengths in both defense and fast-break opportunities to control the pace of the game.

Looking ahead to key matchups, the Cadets eagerly anticipate facing strong opponents, with a significant early-season matchup against Notre Dame of Fairfield. Rivalries with powerhouse teams like Ridgefield and local rival Trumbull add extra excitement to the schedule.

During the offseason, the team dedicated itself to strength and athleticism training, resulting in improved physicality and explosiveness. Keep an eye on returning starter TJ Wright, who earned 2nd Team All FCIAC honors as a sophomore, averaging an impressive 17.7 points per game last season.

Fostering camaraderie has been a priority for the Cadets, achieved through various summer leagues and shared experiences, such as participating in football together during the fall. The close-knit group of players is a testament to the team's commitment to building strong bonds both on and off the court.

Acknowledging the high competitiveness of the FCIAC this season, the Cadets and Bernardi understand the need to bring their A-game every night. Rigorous preparation and a focus on continuous improvement are key elements in overcoming the challenges presented by a tough conference.

The upcoming basketball season for the St. Joseph Cadets carries a profound significance, marking the first time in the school's history that the legendary Coach Vito Montelli won't be watching from the sidelines. Coach Montelli, who with an amazing group of assistants, built the most successful High School Boys Basketball Program in the State, passed away this past summer,  leaving behind a legacy that transcends the sport.

Coach Montelli was not only a basketball coach but a revered figure in the St. Joseph community. His impact extended far beyond the wins and losses, encompassing the values of discipline, dedication, and community spirit that he instilled in his players.

One enduring tradition that Coach Montelli initiated was the Maefair Christmas Eve Caroling, a heartwarming event where players and coaches would gather to sing Christmas carols at Maefair, a nursing home in Trumbull. This tradition symbolizes the program's commitment not only to excellence on the court but also to community engagement and shared experiences. Current SJ coach, Jeff Bernardi, plans to continue this tradition with his group of players this season.

As the Cadets prepare for this season, the absence of Coach Montelli will undoubtedly be felt. His influence, wisdom, and passion for the game were unparalleled, and his legacy continues to inspire players and fans alike.
