In a challenging matchup on Tuesday night, the Stratford girls' basketball team faced a tough loss to Kolbe, with a final score of SHS 49, Kolbe 77. Despite their efforts to mount a comeback in the second and third quarters, Stratford couldn't overcome the early deficit following Kolbe's explosive start.

On the defensive end, the team collectively applied pressure in the full court, narrowing the lead to within 10-12 points in the second and third quarters. Despite their defensive efforts, it proved challenging to erase the early deficit incurred in the first quarter.

Stratford recognized the need to contain Kolbe's speed and prowess on the offensive boards. Defensive keys included getting back in transition and securing defensive rebounds to limit second attempts and put-backs by Kolbe.

In a hard-fought matchup against New Milford, the Stratford girls' basketball team faced early challenges but showcased resilience and determination throughout the game. Despite a slow start, the team found their groove and fought back, with individual players stepping up in the absence of star player Jazmyn Wright.

The game began with Stratford struggling to score, going down by 15 points in the first quarter. Defensively, they found it challenging to stop the taller and more physical New Milford girls. Emma Petrie managed to close the first quarter with a deep 3-pointer, providing the only field goal for Stratford in the opening period.

In the second quarter, the Stratford girls found their rhythm and began to chip away at the deficit. However, despite their efforts, they could never get closer than 10 points for the remainder of the game. The taller and more physical New Milford team posed a continuous challenge.

In a critical moment in the 3rd period,  the Stratford girls had a chance to cut the deficit to 8 points. Grace Petrie drove to the basket, but her layup went in and out, sparking a New Milford fast break. The fast break ended with an open 3-pointer, breaking the momentum that the Red Devils had built. Such moments can be pivotal in a game, and this sequence highlighted the fine margins that can influence the outcome.

The absence of star player Jazmyn Wright, unavailable to play, further limited Stratford's options and depth on the bench. Coach Gilmore faced the challenge of managing a short bench, emphasizing the resilience and effort displayed by the players on the court. She was particularly proud of the play of Grace Petrie who created a matchup problem for New Milford.  Her size, quickness and ball handling ability created foul trouble for the New Milford bigs who tried to keep up with her.  She ended up with a team high 15 points.  Lauren Ogrodowicz fought hard against the Green Wave adding 9 of her own.

Despite the early struggles and the absence of key players, the Stratford girls' basketball team showcased resilience and determination against a tough New Milford opponent. The second-quarter comeback and the missed opportunity to cut the deficit demonstrated the team's ability to compete, even in challenging circumstances. Moving forward, the Red Devils play today at 2:30 against SWC rival New Fairfield in another important conference game.

In a high-stakes basketball showdown, Stratford High School exhibited resilience and tenacity against Immaculate High School, ultimately falling short with a final score of 58-52. The game unfolded with Stratford taking an early lead, capitalizing on Immaculate's misses from the outside.

Stratford initiated the game with a man-to-man defense, challenging Immaculate shooters to make tough shots. Early baskets by Jazmyn Wright and Lauren Ogrodowicz propelled Stratford to a 13-7 lead after the first quarter. The defensive strategy aimed at contesting outside shots seemed effective initially.

However, Immaculate shooters found their rhythm in the second period, scoring an impressive 24 points. Their offense clicked seamlessly, connecting on multiple open 3-pointers and capitalizing on easy transition baskets as Stratford began to tire defensively. Immaculate seized a 31-26 lead at halftime.

Stratford adjusted its defensive approach in the second half, alternating between a 3-2 zone and man-to-man defense. This slowed down Immaculate's shooters, but the team struggled to generate enough offense to reclaim the lead. The game remained closely contested, with both teams battling fiercely.

However, missed free throws and shots allowed Immaculate to hold on for the win. Grace Petrie contributed crucial baskets down the stretch, boosting Stratford's hopes in the late stages of the game.

Last night, the Stratford girls' basketball team faced a formidable challenge against Pomperaug, ultimately falling short with a final score of Stratford 29, Pomperaug 68. The game was marked by scoring droughts in the 2nd and 4th quarters, putting Stratford in holes too deep to recover from against Pomperaug's impressive offensive display.

Stratford's offensive woes were exacerbated by the absence of star player Grace Petrie, whose dynamic playstyle was sorely missed. Petrie, known for putting up double figures, utilizing explosive speed to create opportunities, and being a shutdown defender, was unable to participate in the game. Her absence had a significant impact on the team's ability to keep up with Pomperaug's scoring prowess.

Key contributors like Lily Labella and Sarah D’Aloia were limited to only 2 points each, and sharpshooter Emma Petrie failed to score at all. The scoring distribution highlighted the team's difficulties in finding offensive rhythm without their star player and usual offensive weapons.

As the Lady Red Devils find themselves in a mid-season funk, there remains optimism for improvement. Despite the current challenges, Lauren Ogrodowicz's leadership is crucial in steering the team back on track. The team looks ahead to Thursday, the 11th, when they face Immaculate, a formidable opponent featuring a freshman with Division I skills. Stratford’s own Jazmyn Wright has a similar skill set and will look to out shine the younger talent. While the current record stands at 3 and 6, the Lady Red Devils believe they have not yet showcased their full potential and are eager to make a comeback with the return of Grace Petrie to the lineup.

In the midst of challenges, the girls remain resilient, acknowledging that there is still a lot of basketball to be played in the season. With the return of key players and a focus on regaining their offensive prowess, the Lady Red Devils aim to turn the season around and showcase their true capabilities on the court.

In a challenging back-to-back, the Stratford girls' basketball team faced setbacks against Oxford and Barlow, each presenting unique obstacles. A night after a heartbreaking loss to Oxford, the girls struggled to shake off the disappointment against a well-prepared Barlow squad. Barlow capitalized on Stratford's known vulnerabilities, applying effective pressure to create turnovers. Coach Gilmore, pressed for time with minimal opportunity for adjustments, witnessed recurring issues from the Oxford game resurface against Barlow.

Mia Tartaglia led Barlow's charge with 16 points, showcasing her ability to break down the Stratford defense and generate scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates. Avery Vanderberg capitalized on Tartaglia's assists, contributing 16 points, including a crucial three-pointer.

Stratford's sluggish start proved costly, managing only 7 points in the first quarter and a mere 4 points in the second. The emotional residue from the Oxford loss was palpable, hindering the girls' ability to find their rhythm. Despite Coach Gilmore's lineup adjustments in search of a spark, the Red Devils collectively struggled against Barlow's strategic control.

Jazmyn Wright emerged as the leading scorer for Stratford, posting 14 points and showcasing her offensive prowess. However, the supporting cast, typically reliable, managed only 17 combined points throughout the game. This was in stark contrast to their performance against Oxford, where Grace Petrie alone scored 18 points in a game that saw them tally 61 points.

As the team faces a critical period of reflection, preparing for the upcoming challenging stretch, which begins with a matchup against perennial powerhouse Pomperaug, Coach Gilmore acknowledges the evident talent within the group. The team features sharpshooters in Lily Labella, Sarah D'Aloia, and Emma Petrie, complemented by three formidable players over 5'8" – Lauren Ogrodowicz, Grace Petrie, and Jazmyn Wright – capable of dominating in the post.

Petrie and Wright, known for their athleticism, are formidable forces in transition. Bench players, including Emma Petrie, Shyan Rolle, and Sam D'Aloia, have showcased their ability to contribute on both ends of the court. With a period of reflection on recent challenges and a strategic reassessment of their talented roster, the Stratford ladies aim to reverse their fortunes. An upset win against Pomperaug could serve as a turning point, reigniting the team's season.

Oxford Edges Stratford in Thriller: Final Score 63-61

Staff Writer

A gripping basketball clash unfolded at Stratford High on January 3, 2024, as the Oxford girls' team emerged victorious against the host Stratford squad with a final score of 63-61. The game was a seesaw battle of momentum, featuring an early Stratford lead that Oxford systematically countered at the close of each quarter.

Stratford took the initial reins, propelled by Emma Petrie's sharpshooting prowess. Petrie showcased her long-range accuracy, sinking three 3-pointers throughout the game, with a notable pair in the first quarter. Her early contributions set the tone, but Oxford's resilience allowed them to claw back from double-digit deficits in the second quarter.

Oxford's tenacious defense, coupled with the challenges of a short Stratford bench, led to fatigue-induced lapses at the end of quarters. These moments of vulnerability became opportunities for Oxford, as they capitalized on turnovers and converted easy baskets. In response, Coach Gilmore strategically shifted strategies, employing a 2-3 zone to conserve energy, although Oxford's proficiency from beyond the arc forced a return to man-to-man defense.

The intensity heightened in the fourth quarter when Oxford introduced a full-court press, causing Stratford to burn two crucial timeouts while attempting to navigate the pressure. Lily Labella stepped up in the fourth quarter, contributing eight of her 12 points to maintain Stratford's lead. However, the landscape changed when Grace Petrie fouled out with just two minutes left. Grace, with a team-leading 18 points, had been a linchpin for Stratford's offense, and her absence proved critical.

Despite the setback, freshman Sammy D'Aloia injected energy off the bench, applying defensive pressure and chipping in with six crucial second-quarter points. Lauren Ogrodowicz exhibited tenacity, pulling down rebounds and contributing nine points for Stratford.

Coach Gilmore remains optimistic, recognizing the untapped potential within the team. Jazmyn Wright, with only six points in the second half, is a potent scorer capable of explosive performances. The Red Devils are poised for significant growth as they anticipate having all their stars clicking simultaneously.

Celebrating the Impact of Youth Sports: A Glance at the Stratford High Girls Basketball Alumni Game

12/30/23

Staff Writer

In a heartwarming display of camaraderie and shared experiences, the Stratford High Girls Basketball team recently hosted its annual alumni game. The event brought together players from the past three graduating classes to engage in a friendly scrimmage against the current squad, transforming the court into a nostalgic battleground where friendships were forged and memories revisited.

The stands were filled with enthusiastic parents, grandparents, and supporters, creating one of the most spirited crowds the team had witnessed all season. As the girls showcased their skills and competitiveness, it became a poignant reminder of the profound value of youth sports in the development of children.

The sheer joy radiating from the players' faces as they competed against and alongside old friends was infectious. Smiles lit up the court, reflecting the genuine pleasure the girls derived from the game. Notably, the grandmother of current player Lauren Ogrodowicz and her sister, Amanda, an alumna from two seasons ago, exemplified the joyous atmosphere. Despite the fierce competition between her granddaughters, the grandmother's beaming smile underscored the true spirit of sports – bringing families together in celebration.

The alumni's parents shared sentiments about the enduring impact of youth sports on their children's lives. Juliette Mascisco, an alumna from two years ago, treasured the experience of playing sports with friends since her St. Mark's school days, according to her dad Chris. These shared experiences cultivated friendships that have endured through high school and beyond. The stability derived from these lifelong bonds is especially significant in today's stressful world.

The common thread of shared experiences extended beyond the players to their families. Many parents, who have been friends since their kids began playing together or against each other at the nearby St. James School or St. Mark witnessed the power of sports in fostering connections. Just ask the 20 or so parents at the pre and post game tailgate hosted by the Ogrodowiczs.

Chris Perley, father of Samantha Perley (a graduate from three seasons ago) and coach of many of the girls at St. Mark's, emphasized the profound impact of sports on his children's lives. He highlighted the invaluable life lessons learned through sports, including handling pressure in critical moments and dealing with adversity. From the pressure of a free throw in a crucial game to overcoming setbacks on the court, these experiences equip kids with resilience and coping mechanisms applicable throughout their lives.

In another insightful conversation, Jason D'Aloia, whose daughters Sarah and Sammy currently play for Stratford High and whose son, Michael, starred on the boys' team three years ago, shared that sports have instilled in his kids the value of resilience. Whether facing perceived unfair treatment from a coach or attempting a comeback in a game where they've fallen behind, sports have taught his children never to quit.

The score of the game truly did not matter, but every girl on both sides played as if it did. In the end, every girl, parent, grandparent, or teacher who attended ended up winning. It was all smiles and hugs when the final buzzer sounded, and talk of who would win in next year's matchup filled the air. The true victory lay in the shared moments of joy, camaraderie, and sportsmanship that transcended the final score, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone involved.

Grace Petrie emerged as the offensive standout of the game, leading all scorers with an impressive 16 points. Her dominating performance extended beyond scoring, showcasing her prowess on the glass at both ends of the court. Petrie's contributions played a crucial role in keeping Stratford competitive in the game.

To counter Foran's key player, Faith Doyle, several players were designated to match up with her in half-court, including Emma Petrie, Danyelle Bellamy, and Shyan Rolle. Their collective efforts held Doyle to just 3 points in the first half, demonstrating effective defensive strategies to limit her touches and influence on the game.

The primary defensive focus was on limiting Faith Doyle, Foran's all-state and leading scorer. Stratford successfully held Doyle to only 3 points initially. However, there were moments in the second half when lapses in defense allowed Doyle to capitalize on open opportunities, showcasing the importance of consistent defensive pressure.

Stratford faced challenges in the second quarter, struggling to make baskets and scoring just 4 points. Coach Kelsey Gilmore acknowledged the difficulty in filling the scoring void left by Junior star Jazmyn Wright, who is expected to return after the holidays. Without Wright, other players stepped up in unfamiliar roles. Emma Petrie demonstrated her ability to score and create off the dribble, while Lily Labella showcased scoring versatility both inside and from the 3-point line. Shyan Rolle utilized her opportunities, highlighting exceptional athleticism and shooting touch.

Coach Gilmore sees the early glimpses of players stepping into new roles as promising for the team's future. With the return of the entire team after the holidays, she anticipates the emergence of a cohesive unit, optimistic about the potential for an amazing season ahead.

In a resounding display of skill and teamwork, the Stratford High School girls' basketball team secured a convincing 54-24 victory over Bunnell High School. The game showcased standout performances on both ends of the court, with key players making significant contributions that shaped the outcome.

The offensive standouts of the game were evident as three players, Lily Labella, Lauren Ogrodowicz, and Grace Petrie, all achieved double figures in scoring. Their combined efforts fueled the team's offensive success, showcasing a balanced and dynamic attack. Labella, Ogrodowicz, and Petrie played pivotal roles, contributing not only in scoring but also in creating opportunities for their teammates.

Stratford's defensive performance was a welcome sight for Coach Kelsey Gilmore, especially after the Bethel game the night before, with subpar defensive efforts. The team's focus on cleaning up their half-court defense proved effective. Strategies to eliminate dribble penetration and enhance perimeter defense were key factors that limited Bunnell's offensive opportunities.

The turning point of the game came in the third quarter, where a defensive surge by Stratford, and some sharp shooting put Bunnell in a difficult position. Stratford held Bunnell to a mere 2 points in the second quarter, but in the 3rd the offense started clicking as well, setting the stage for a dominant third-quarter start. Key possessions, including two 3-pointers from Sarah D'Aloia and offensive rebounds with put-backs by Danielle Bellamy, solidified Stratford's control and extended their lead.

Coach Gilmore gives credit to the bench and a few JV players who made their varsity debut, contributing to the team's success in closing out the game. Their positive contributions showcased the depth and potential for continued development within the team. Even with star player Jazmyn Wright missing from action, players like Emma Petrie and Maddy Bike stepped up, logging significant minutes for the Red Devils.

Stratford's impressive victory against Bunnell demonstrates the team's commitment to improvement and resilience. The balanced offensive performance, coupled with a rejuvenated defense, sets a positive tone for the remainder of the season. As the team continues to develop and integrate new players into the lineup, the future looks promising for the Stratford High School girls' basketball team. 🏀💪

The game kicked off with early dominance from Stratford, led by sharpshooting performances from Jazmyne Wright, Sara D'Aloia, and Lily Labella. However, as the namesake of the St Joseph gymnasium, legendary Coach Vito Montelli, used to say, basketball is a game of runs. Coach Chris Lindwall strategically called a timeout late in the first quarter to halt Stratford's momentum, setting the stage for a strategic turnaround by the Lady Cadets.

Her defensive prowess played a pivotal role in extending the lead and maintaining control of the game. As St Joseph continues to showcase their talent and experience on the court, they are poised to compete once again for a state championship. Stratford High School Indoor Track Gears Up for a Dynamic Season
Staff Writer

As the winter season approaches, the Stratford High School Indoor Track team is gearing up for
an exciting campaign in the SWC. Competing in a highly competitive league is not easy but this
group is determined to leave their mark on both the SWC championships and the State Class L
tournament. Led by Senior Captains Zachery Rider, Angelina Taccogna, and Isabella Pato,
along with the seasoned experience of seniors Hasan McGee, Johan Delorbe, Niyah Lewis, and
Jaylen Evans, the team boasts a blend of leadership and talent. The squad is also welcoming
new faces, with noteworthy newcomers adding depth to their roster. This mix of experience and
fresh energy sets the stage for an exciting season as the team pursues their goals and
aspirations in the upcoming indoor track competitions.

The team employs an efficient practice model focused on building intensity in workouts. With
strengths in both sprinting and jumping, they plan to leverage a group of very athletic kids
strategically to score points during competitions. In the SWC, every meet poses a significant
challenge. The league's intensity promises tough competition at every turn, making each
matchup a key test for the team.
Senior leadership plays a pivotal role in the team's development, with returners like Ryder,
Taccogna and Pato taking the lead in mentoring younger runners. This mentorship is crucial,
especially for those who are new to the sport of track.
Coach Brennan Fraczek describes his new team as a competitive yet close-knit group, who
foster an environment where runners challenge each other to improve and hold themselves
accountable for attendance and performance. This camaraderie is a strength that Fraczek
believes will likely propel the team forward.
Anticipated challenges include the lack of a dedicated track for practice. Most other high schools
in the state can practice on their outdoor track when the weather cooperates. Stratford High
sadly does not have a track of their own and despite this obstacle, the runners demonstrate
resilience by using whatever resources are available to them to prepare for the season, without
complaints. They are just happy to be together working to get better. This includes even
running in the halls of the school after dismissal.
All indoor league meets will be held at the indoor track facility in Bethel. Fans would be a
welcome sight. Additionally, the team actively engages with fans on Instagram, providing
updates and fostering a sense of community

Beyond the track, the team is not only focused on athletic success but also on giving back to the

Key returning swimmers, including Bunnell Junior Cesar Padilla and Stratford Seniors Ty Faerdy and Gabriel Rodriguez, are leading the charge alongside six noteworthy newcomers from various grades.

With a focus on sportsmanship, skill development, teamwork, competition, and fun, the team sets its sights on qualifying for SWC's and States, acknowledging the challenge of the tough Class LL. The team's  style centers around intentional training and proper techniques to improve swim times and clinch victories.

Despite a tough season last year, the addition of new team members has fostered hope for success. While they may not have specific rivals, the goal this season is to secure a victory after narrowly losing to Barlow and New Fairfield last  year. Swimmer development is evident with some swimmers joining swim clubs for added preparation. As a co-op team, the camaraderie and chemistry between Bunnell and Stratford players contribute to a positive training environment.

Challenges include the team's small size, prompting a focus on building endurance and refining techniques. Off the court, team captains Gabriel Rodriguez, Ty Faerdy, and Cesar Padilla showcase remarkable achievements and community service, exemplifying excellence both in and out of the pool. Dominant Defensive Display Propels SHS to Victory over Lauralton Hall

In an exhilarating matchup between SHS and Lauralton Hall, the former emerged victorious with a convincing 60-42 scoreline. While the game showcased stellar offensive performances, it was the team's relentless defensive effort that proved to be the linchpin in securing the triumph.

Lauren Ogrodowicz Leads the Charge

Senior forward Lauren Ogrodowicz was the beacon of offensive prowess for SHS in this matchup. With an impressive 19 points, Ogrodowicz displayed exceptional accuracy from the free-throw line, sinking 9 out of 10 attempts. Her scoring proficiency was complemented by a dominant presence on the boards, grabbing an astounding 9 rebounds. Ogrodowicz's performance undoubtedly played a pivotal role in driving SHS's scoring efforts. And speaking of drives, Ogrodowicz is also an All State golfer placing 2nd in this past year's state meet with an incredible score of 81.

Lily Labella Shuts Down Lauralton's Leading Scorer

Senior guard Lily Labella showcased her defensive prowess by containing Lauralton Hall's point guard and leading scorer, Maura Bosse to just 10 points, with just one field goal throughout the game. Labella's tenacity and strategic defensive plays disrupted Lauralton's offensive rhythm, significantly impacting the outcome of the game. Emma Petrie complimented Labella’s staunch defense with a few early steals, deflections and rebounds frustrating Lauralton’s other sharp shooter Katelyn Landin, who still managed 11 points for the Crusaders.

Man-to-Man Defense and Ball Pressure

SHS's defensive strategy, particularly in the first half, created substantial challenges for Lauralton Hall. Employing a stifling man-to-man defense and applying intense ball pressure, SHS forced their opponents into two shot clock violations during the initial periods. These defensive plays set the tone for the game and laid the foundation for SHS's overall dominance.

Lauralton Comeback

The Crusaders have no quit in them.  Down 47 to 23 to start the 4th quarter they could have easily saved their energy to fight another day.  Bosse, Landin and Amayah Kelly were not ready to call it a night though. They combined for 19 points in the final period turning what looked like an easy victory for the Red Devils into a tight final 3 minutes.  This trio made it a 10 point game until Sarah Daloia(8 points) reentered the game knocking down a back breaking 3 that turned the tide back in favor of Stratford.  Jazmyn Wright(7 points) and Grace Petrie(13 points) used their amazing athleticism to turn the last few minutes of the game into a track meet, that the Crusaders just could not keep up with.

Team Effort in Critical Moments

In critical moments, it was not just one standout player but rather a total team effort that propelled SHS to success. With all varsity players contributing significant minutes defensively and eight different players making offensive contributions, the depth and versatility of the team were on full display. This collaborative effort during crucial moments underscored the strength and cohesion of the SHS squad.
